Shadow Work

Lavor Ombra’s invocation is to the goddess Chhaya  (Chhāyā, meaning “shadow” or “shade”).   Like the River Ganga, shadow is never empty, nor static. It carries memory, flow and the possibility of becoming.   Chhaya is the Hindu personification of endurance. Unable to bear her husband Surya’s blinding, scorching heat, Saranyu brought her own shadow to life to take her place, allowing her to disappear to the forest. Chhaya embodies duality. Born from light yet existing in absence.

Moody Palermo street or interior scene in strong light and shadow, suggesting the city’s layered, turbulent history and quiet rebirth

In cosmic architecture, shadows are fundamentally tied to the concept of weaving and threads—the subtle, unseen connections that bind cause to effect. Creation in the shadows: a powerful archetype for those of us who hold the world together from behind the scenes.

Portrait of founder Mariella Ienna in a refined interior with textiles, conveying her role as Italian designer working between Italy and India.

“Shadow is a protective cloak, a place where history is quietly processed. Lavor Ombra is a homage to Palermo."

Palermo’s history is not contained to Norman and Baroque gilded palazzi, but in the unseen threads pulled from the shadows -whether for control or for survival—holding immense power over a culture's destiny.

Chhaya's ultimate lesson is that darkness is the source from which a different kind of light is born.

A photograph of the founder, Mariella Ienna seated at a table in a dimly lit room, focused on working with bundles of pale fibrous material laid out before her.

Palermo has lived through profound darkness—plagues, foreign conquests, bombings in WWII and the devastating violence of the 20th-century. Yet, like Chhaya's lineage, Palermo's modern identity is defined by a fierce, radiant rebirth.

Our Founder has woven a solid reputation over 20 years in India’s niche, highly technical rug and textile industry—the only place where handmade knotted rugs can be produced at scale with true artisan consistency.  Unlike most designers, she follows ardently Lavor Ombra’s productions on the ground in India, living between Italy and India.

A Life long pursuit

Lavor Ombra approaches sustainability as an ongoing responsibility rather than a statement. Working with natural materials, small-batch production, and long-standing artisan relationships in India, each piece respects people and place — focused on longevity, thoughtful sourcing, and traditional techniques.
